Spring concert of the Musikkapelle Heiden
„Kalinka – Dance into the East“
On Saturday, 12 th March the annual spring concert of the Musikkapelle Heiden took place in the Westmünsterland hall in Heiden.
The chairmen Johannes Gesing and Jörg Wehling welcomed the more than seven hundred guests. Responsible for more information in between the pieces of music were the moderators Marianne Grütering and Annette Nienhoff.
The Youth Orchestra under the conductorship of Ralf Schmittkamp started off the concert with the piece „Artic challenge“ from Sven Calster, followed by „A Klezmer ´Karnival“ from the American composer Philip Sparke. With „Glasnost“ written by Dizzy Stratford the Youth Orchestra finished their performance. However, the audience wanted to listen to more music from the 30 young musicians. And the youngsters were prepared for it. With much enthusiasm they played „You raise me up“ und two musicians named Victoria and Lukas Buß changed from players into singers – a very good performance.
With the „Coronation March“ from Peter Ilyich Tschaikowsky the Musikkapelle Heiden began their part of the concert night. Dancing tunes arranged wonderfully for a wind band were presented with the pieces „Puszta“ from Jan van der Roost and „Armenian Dances“ from Alfred Reed.
The changing paces within the pieces of music were not to big a challenge for the orchestra as its conductor André Baumeister lead his musicians perfectly.
In the second half of the concert the audience could listen to „Pictures at an exhibition – The great Gate of Kiev“ from Mussorgsky.
The concert programme then offered a very special highlight: when performing the sound track of the movie „Schindler’s Liste “ a violin played the main theme – like it was in the original composition. The soloist Markus Richter from Heiden did a very good job playing this emotional tune so wonderfully.
The Musikkapelle presented their listeners a really wide range of pieces at this concert night. Having finished the „March from the Jazz Suite“ from Dimitri Shostakovich the musicians put on traditional Russian songs with „Russian spectacular“. The players not only showed their abilities on their instruments but also their vocal abilities: when the tune „Kalinka“ was about to be played, André Baumeister animated his male musicians to change into a cossack choir. Not only did the singers wear Russian hats, they also sang in Russian language and sang in several voices – what a performance! The audience honoured it with heavy applause.
Now the classical and traditional melodies changed into moderne ones.
The „Sonderzug nach Pankow“ was about to come and the former member of the Musikkapelle Heiden Christian Pieper took over the singing part from Udo Lindenberg.
The last piece of music was a premiere for all listeners: „Wind of Change“ from the Scorpions was arranged for wind band for the first time ever. And this job did Stefan Wehling, a member of the Musikkapelle Heiden.
Markus Grütering and Dirk Thesing supported Christian Piper with their vocals and their guitars.
The guests in the Westmünsterland hall insisted on hearing more music by long enthusiastic applause. The Musikkapelle was prepared for that: they presented the „Saber Dance“ and once again „Kalinka“ from the Musikkapellen cossack choir.
During this concert night two members of the Musikkapelle were honoured for their 50 year membership: Karl-Heinz Voßkamp and Willibald Knüwer.
Since 1966 they are constant members of this orchestra and took over several tasks during their membership – thank you very much!
